Saturday March 25, 2006Men's Basketball Advances To Elite Eight With 57-53 Win Over Hoyas

Minneapolis, Minn.

Sophomore Corey Brewer’s shot with 27.5 seconds remaining to play fell in while he was falling down and he turned it into three points helping the Gators to a 57-53 victory over Georgetown Friday night at the Metrodome in Minneapolis. With the victory, UF advanced to the Elite Eight for the third time in school history where the Gators will face No. 1 seed Villanova at 5:05 ET on Sunday.

The 2005-06 squad made its own history becoming the first team to reach 30 wins as the Gators moved their record to 30-6 on the year.

Sophomore Joakim Noah led the squad with 15 points and 10 rebounds and he also turned in five blocked shots. Sophomores Taurean Green and Al Horford also reached double figures with 13 and 12 points, respectively.

The contest was tight and featured four ties and seven lead changes before Brewer’s shot and free throw pulled the Gators ahead for good.

Junior Lee Humphrey made a pair of three pointers to become UF’s single season record holder with 101 this year. His second came with 2:20 left in the game to put Florida on top 52-51. Georgetown’s Ashanti Cook answered with a jumper to give the Hoyas their final points of the game.

Florida trailed by one when Brewer’s shot went in and he got fouled by Brandon Bowman. Brewer nailed the free throw to make it 55-53. Georgetown had an open look at a three-pointer on its final possession, but Darrel Owens’ shot hit the back of the rim. Horford was fouled and hit both free throws to put the game out of reach with 6.6 seconds left.

The Gators trailed by nine in the first half before going on a 16-5 run with only a few minutes remaining. UF also had an 8-0 run to begin the second half before Georgetown answered to keep things close for the remainder of the game.

Defensively, Georgetown held its fourth straight opponent to under 60 points, however the Gators showed up as well limiting the Hoyas to 5-of-21 on three point attempts.
