Saturday March 11, 2006No. 3 Men's Golf Tied For Seventh At The Southern Highlands Collegiate

Las Vegas, NV

No. 3 Florida moved into a tie with Arizona State for seventh place at the Southern Highlands Collegiate Championships on Saturday after recording a team score of 294 (+6). Senior Matt Every (Daytona Beach, Fla.) had a team-best score of 71 (-1) to lead the Gators.

Every bounced back after carding a 79 during the first round on Friday. He made birdie on the fourth and 12th holes, which was enough to help the Gator turn their fortunes around. Every is currently tied for 21st going into the final round on Sunday.

Freshman Toby Ragland (Jacksonville, Fla.) had a clean second round, going one-over par for the day. Ragland did not have a bogey through the first nine holes. His only blemish came on the par-five 10th hole.

Senior James Vargas (Miami, Fla.) continues to lead the team with an overall score of 74-75 = 149 (+5). Vargas went three-over-par during the second round and is currently tied for 13th-place. Senior Brett Stegmaier (Madison, Conn.) started the day tied with Vargas for the team lead, but made four consecutive bogies on the back-nine to fall off the pace.

Freshman Billy Horschel (Grant, Fla.) lowered his score by three strokes from Friday’s total (78-79 = 153) and heads into the final day tied for 39th.

“We played a lot better than we did yesterday even though we didn’t pick up more ground,” Florida coach Buddy Alexander said. “It was an easier day to play today; it was still cold but less windy. Unfortunately nothing special happened.”

UNLV and Georgia lead the 15-team field going into the third and final round. The Rebels and Bulldogs carded identical scores of 294 on Saturday. Georgia’s Chris Kirk recorded a 67 (-5) to move ahead of UCLA’s Daniel Im for the lead.

The Gators will continue the tournament on Sunday starting at 11 a.m. (ET). Live stats can be found at www.golfstat.com.
