The Florida
Softball team (18-9) snapped a nine-game Iowa State
(11-7) win streak with an 8-3 win in the Stetson Tournament on Saturday
afternoon. The Gators used 10 hits, including two doubles from senior Lindsey
Cameron (Palm Beach Gardens,
Fla.) to the Cyclones six for the
win.
Florida got on the board first in the top
half of the first frame. Freshman Kim Waleszonia (Fontana, Calif.)
was hit by a Alyssa Ransom pitch to lead off the
inning. Cameron knocked a double to right. With one out, Waleszonia
scored the Gators’ first run on a base hit by junior Melissa Zick (Tampa,
Fla.). Junior Lauren Roussell (Cerritos,
Calif.) was hit by a pitch to
load the bases. A junior Lacy Howard (League City,
Texas) ground out scored Cameron from third to
put Florida ahead 2-0.
Iowa State got a runner to third in the bottom
of the second. A base hit to right field looked as if it would score a Cyclone
run, but Florida right fielder Waleszonia gunned a strike to senior catcher Kristen Butler
(Orlando, Fla.)
at home to prevent the run from scoring and end the inning.
The
Cyclones put their first run up in the bottom of the fourth. Fallon Johnson
reached on a Gator error to lead off the inning and was able to advance to
second on the play. She moved to third on a sacrifice by Ashley Killeen. A
Katie Reichling base hit brought in Johnson to narrow
Florida’s l;ead to 2-1.
The Gators
added three runs to their tally in the top of the sixth. After consecutive base
hits by Howard and Roussell, Amie
Ford came in to replace Cyclone starter Kristy Oleson
in the pitching circle. A throwing error by the Iowa
State third baseman allowed senior
Lindsay Norfleet (Madison, Fla.)
to reach on a sacrifice attempt and scored junior Shelley Stevens (Gainesville,
Fla.), who was pinch running for Roussell, to score
from third. Two outs and a walk, loaded the bases for Cameron. Cameron grabbed
a pitch at her eyes for a double to left to bring in two more runs for the
Gators and give them a 5-1 lead.
Florida added three more runs in the top of the seventh as senior
Stacie Pestrak (Gainesville,
Fla.) hit a bases clearing triple
with two outs in the inning to give the Gators an 8-1 lead.
Iowa State added two runs on two hits and a
Gator error in the bottom of the seventh to end the game at 8-3 in favor of the
Gators.
Freshman
Lindsay Littlejohn (Bartow,
Fla.) went the distance for the
Gators in the pitching circle to earn the win and improve her record to 5-4 on
the season. Starter Oleson took the loss for the
Cyclones to move her record to 5-4 on the year.
The Gators
will face host Stetson Saturday night at 5:30 p.m.
