Friday September 2, 2011No. 9 Gators Roll to 3-Set Sweep over Jacksonville
Gainesville, Fla.
The No.
9 Florida volleyball team rolled to a 3-set sweep (25-20, 25-15, 25-6) of
Jacksonville University on Friday afternoon in the Stephen C. O’Connell Center.
The Gators move to 4-0 on the year while the Dolphins fall to 2-4.
The
Gators held the Dolphins to -.075 hitting percentage, the second Florida
opponent to fall victim to hitting in negative numbers. Florida has held all
four of its opponents to less than .200 offensive output
this season.
Florida
was led by juniors Betsy Smith (Atlanta, Ga.) and Tangerine Wiggs (Seattle, Wash.) who hit at .556 and .714 clips,
respectively. Gator libero Taylor Unroe (Muncie, Ind.) had a match-high
10 digs for her third-straight double-digit dig effort. Senior
right-side/setter Kelly Murphy (Wilmington, Ill.) and sophomore setter Chanel
Brown (Tempe, Ariz.) combined for 27 assists.
The
Gators held the Owls to six points in the third set, the lowest total for an
opponent since Sept. 28, 2003 when Florida held Auburn to set score of 30-6.
This is only the second time in the rally scoring era that the Gators have held
an opponent to just six points in a set.
Nearly
every reserve came off the bench for the Gators, combining for five kills,
eight digs, two aces and four blocks.
The
Dolphins and Gators faced off in the first set with a quick draw for points.
The Gators never let up the lead, but allowed the Dolphins an early tie at 5-5.
Anderson delivered an attack on the Dolphins’ back row that started a 5-0
serving run for Ferrell to extend the Gators to a 14-8 lead. A perfect set from
Brown gave Ferrell an open line shot to start another 5-0 run with Unroe behind
the service line. The Dolphins battled back, but a service error by
Jacksonville’s Kendall Courtney gave the Gators the 25-20 win.
The second
stanza began with a Murphy ace as the Gators grabbed an early 2-0 lead. The
Dolphins came out ready to battle, tying the score a total of seven times and
taking the lead from the Gators once at 6-7. The Orange and Blue took the lead
back after a Jacksonville attack error brought the score to 9-8. Cassandra
Anderson (Bakersfield, Calif.) served a 4-0 run to give the Gators a 15-11
lead. A string of seven Dolphin errors allowed the Gators to rack up points,
and Noami Santos-Lamb (Carolina, Puerto Rico)’s outstanding solo-block extended
the lead to 20-13. After her blast to middle-back, the Dolphins called a
timeout at 21-13. Sundai Weston (Naples, Fla.)’s
service ace gave the Gators the 25-15 win.
After
the intermission, the Gators came out on a tear. The third set was a serving
game for the Orange and Blue as UF took a 7-0 lead with Santos-Lamb behind the
service line. Murphy set up Jaeckel’s attack to start another 3-0 run served by
Brown to extend the lead to 12-2. Between Smith and Murphy, the Gators
unleashed three kills on the Dolphins that pushed the Gators ahead, 16-3. The
Dolphins were unable to reach double digits in the set, as they were swamped by
Weston’s serve, allowing Florida to go on a 4-0 run. Mann slammed a kill home
to give the Gators match point and a Dolphins error ended the set and the
match, 25-6.
Florida
now faces Florida Atlantic at 7:30 p.m. The Gators hold a 2-0 advantage
all-time against the Owls, both matches during Wise’s tenure. Florida last
faced Florida Atlantic in the first round of the 2005 NCAA Tournament (30-19,
30-15, 30-14).
