Florida Head Coach Tim Walton
“A great job by Delanie (Gourley); she really set the tone for us today with that first inning. She went out there and threw the ball well. She did a good job. I’m really proud of her in her first postseason start. Then, Lauren (Haeger) stepping up in the first inning and also doing a good job by getting on second base by hitting the ball the other way and then hitting the homerun to set the tempo. So, just good all the way around.
“I’m just really happy with the way we executed our offense. We had a lot of positives in the way we swung the bat. Just little things like being able to move runners along. Justine McLean getting the RBI in the fifth inning, just kind of doing their job. We’ve been working really hard on getting our game plan a little bit better with situational hitting and today I thought we were really good with that.”
facing Stetson tomorrow:
“They’ve been playing well. They won their conference tournament. The top of their lineup really sets them up well. They are pitching well; they have good pitching with good spins and good location and a lot of good things going. I was impressed with their offense and how well they got some good two-strike hits and showed some excitement. I really appreciated that style when they were down and they came back to tie it up and win it. It’s going to be a good ballgame tomorrow.”
Junior Lauren Haeger
On if there’s something different about her approach in postseason:
“No, it’s just a whole different thing. Coach talks a lot about how none of your stats matter anymore from the season. It’s new stats, whole new world in the postseason. So I just try to go up there and just get on base for my team and go up with a better plan and just do my job.”
Delanie Gourley, Freshman Pitcher
On if there were any concerns facing FAMU since they had seen her before:
“I mean, I wasn’t concerned. I went in there with more confidence because last time I faced them I pitched really well and I just wanted to go into this game with that mindset and continue my performance from the last game.”
Florida A&M Head Coach Veronica Wiggins
What she talked about with team after game:
“I asked them to have short-term memory. And that’s what it’s all about. It’s a game, but we’ve got to come prepared. We’ll see what they bring tomorrow. If they bring what they brought at the MEAC Tournament, we’ll be okay. I have a lot of confidence that will show up.”
On Saturday’s game with UCF:
“They have a great team. All teams that make it at this point are pretty good and will come to play. We played them earlier in the season but that doesn’t count. All that matters is what happens tomorrow.
Ashleigh Minter, Senior Pitcher
On today’s game:
Today we did well but we always can do better. Obviously what we did today didn’t work so now we build off that and just bring more energy and we’ve got it.
Mindset for Saturday’s game:
“Tomorrow could be the last, but we are not going to make it our last. I will go out and make sure I have my team’s back and my team has mine. That’s all I can ask for. If we play like I know we can, we’ll be fine.
