Game Recap

The Gators defeated South Florida 2-0 to advance to the Super Regionals of the 2013 NCAA Tournament. Junior Hannah Rogers pitched a complete game, surrendering three hits, walking none and did not give up a run. Florida benefited from six walks from South Florida pitcher Sara Nevins.

Florida Head Coach Tim Walton

Opening statement:

“USF had a great season, always a tough game. It was probably exactly how we thought that game was going to go with two quality pitchers going at each other. Two good teams, two good young teams. I thought that was a really good game. Obviously, I am very proud of my players. I am proud of my young players, my old players, and my returning players. I just am really happy for our whole program to be able to continue to play well, continue to play the game the right way, do good things, and take care of each other. These ladies up here, obviously instrumental to our win today. Hannah (Rogers) was awesome today. In the circle and defensively, we did a really nice job. Sarah (Nevins) was really, really good. She was as tough as she has been on us in a couple of years. She was throwing some pretty good pitches and they made some nice plays, as well. Again, I am just really happy for our program being able to continue our season. 55 wins in a season is an enormous amount of wins. I am very proud of everybody involved.”

On Hannah Rogers:

“I thought she was really impressive. Hannah and I had a conversation in the dugout yesterday about her being able to throw the ball a little more through the zone. I felt like she was trying to miss bats yesterday, more so than she was today. She was coming out and really throwing the ball, I don’t want to say harder, had a little more late break to it. Again, that’s not me trying to take credit for. I thought she put emphasis on throwing the ball through the zone as opposed getting the ball to break so much and miss bats. That’s one thing I was taught a long time ago as a pitcher. You just have to go out there sometimes and allow the hitters to hit your pitch. If they do a god job, give them the credit. You just can’t go out there and miss bats and trick everybody all the time.”

On returning to the Super Regionals:

“This is a huge accomplishment. This is going to down as one of the best jobs this team has done. With so many question marks coming into the season, so many new starters, this is one of the most gratifying feelings that I have had in a long time. To have a team so young, a team that has so much fun, a team that still goes about it the right way and does it the way I want it done. They still have fun. They play loose. They are clutch, athletic. They just do so many nice things. For that, I give them the credit. Our coaching staff, we have always worked hard, but we really made an adjustment with our philosophy on our program just trying to focus on the Gators and not worry about too many things about the opponents. I think they are buying into that pretty well.”

Florida Junior Pitcher Hannah Rogers

On today’s tight game

“You just have to go out there and keep competing because if you get down for one second; it’s only a two-run game and they could come back at any moment. It’s keep our energy level up high throughout the game”

On not giving any walks

“I was just trying to make better pitches and trying to keep them off-balance and just letting my defense working for me today.”

On being back in the Super Regional

“It’s exciting because we get to go out there and play for the fans and for ourselves. It’s amazing just to continue to go out there and have fun and be there for each other.”

Florida Freshman Second Base Kelsey Stewart

On getting Florida’s only hit today in the 7th inning

“It was really nice; hitting is a mental game so having hits is a big thing for us. Just staying mentally tough and just fighting; sooner or later the ball is going to fall, so it was really nice.”

On fourth inning’s bases loaded moment

“Anytime you get bases loaded it’s a ‘we got to do something here’ moment; it’s important to score.”

On Sarah Nevins performance today

“I really think that the umpire was giving more of her corners which made her more confident in her pitches.”

South Florida Head Coach Ken Eriksen

Opening Statement

“Congratulations to Tim Walton and the University of Florida softball program. Phenomenal job this year. I look for them to really make an impact from this point on through the postseason. They have done a great job with putting a fantastic coaching staff together. They are very deep in their lineup. The pitching staff is very deep. That is what you aspire for. There is a model to build a program and we are on the same path as that right now. They just happen to be a couple of years ahead of us, which is phenomenal in respect of where they are. They had kind of a disappointing end to their year last year but the backing by the administration made it very easy for them to succeed. Like I said I look forward to seeing them in the postseason. They are a very exciting team. Very proud of the way the young women at the University of South Florida bounced back after a devastating game yesterday against the University of Florida. An 11-1 game. Sometimes it is not working, but if you can put things behind you it says a lot about your program and a lot about the people you recruited. I am so proud of the way our team battled today in the heat and the hostile environment. These two young ladies have made my life very easy over the last three years. There are not many pitchers who come through a program and in one year both of them exceed 200 strikeouts, earned run averages below 1.2. Needless to say they have probably saved me a bunch of grey hairs over the years.”

On the season ending and just making small errors today

“You are never excited to see the season end. I want to take a look at the statistics. It doesn’t matter to me what we gave up, I know the other team scored more than we did. We got beat today. The other team was better than we were today. Whether we didn’t give up any runs or not, I’m not sure Hannah (Rogers) would have given up any runs either. We could have been here until five o’clock playing this one game. That is how much those two pitchers were on today. I just so happened that we broke a little bit with the control situation. You can’t catch the walks. We gave them some free passes, but you have to give them the credit. Their batters know the strike zone. The umpire was a phenomenal umpire. Their hitters did their job, we didn’t do as well as we could have. They did better than we did so that’s why the won the ballgame. Both pitchers movement was really tremendous today. With the weather and humidity, I would take those two kids on any team I coached. They were warriors out there in that heat. They represented their teams really well. It is tough to end any season but going through the year that we went through and knowing that Nevins had knee surgery in November. She wasn’t really healthy until about the fifth game of the year. We had a great pitching staff, obviously you saw Lindsey do some great things and the two young kids do a good job yesterday so I will be back in the office tomorrow making out the lineups for game on next year.”

South Florida Senior Pitcher Lindsey Richardson

On what will remember from career at USF

“Probably everything. My girls and my coaches though for sure. They have been great.”

South Florida Junior Pitcher Sara Nevins

On frustration of Florida getting around the bases but not able to get hits

“Yeah it is frustrating but you just have to work around it and get it to your defense so they can make plays from there. You can’t really think about it because then I will definitely overthrow the ball.”

On what did today to be sharper on the mound

“I didn’t overthink things and worry about it. I just tried to throw and play for fun.”
