Game Recap

USF defeated Georgia Southern 1-0 in the first game of the Gainesville Regional. The teams were scoreless through seven innings and required one extra inning to decide the outcome. USF’s Kourtney Salvarola laid down a bunt to score Ashli Goff for the game-winning run in the bottom of the eighth inning.

USF Head Coach Ken Eriksen

On Goff

“If you remember in Ashli’s first year, she batted second for us. Right now with Kenshyra Jackson hitting the ball well and the three freshmen playing well, you can move the lineup around a little bit. If you have Ashli Goff batting eighth for you, you’re doing pretty good. She is a tough kid, she can play. She finds the moment. She doesn’t back down from the moment. That type of kid like Sara Nevins and Lee Ann Spivey. They are almost emotionless during the ball game, it doesn’t matter how big the game is, we’re still playing hard. She shined today. She wasn’t trying to do anything big, she was real simple. The simple part of getting the bat to the ball on Sarah Purvis, we failed to do that today consistently. We were swinging, we weren’t hitting. A great spin pitcher like that, you have to be able to hit, not swing through it. She did a great job of it. You guys are going to lose the fact that she did a great job for us, but the kid behind her did an unbelievable job of putting the ball on the ground for the sacrifice bunt and the two-strike slap to the base by her sister. Those are the little things that don’t get the publicity. She deserves as much credit as her sister did.”

USF Junior OF Ashli Goff

On her hit in the eighth inning

“I was just trying to get it in play because I knew it was extra innings. I did what I’ve been doing. I just wanted to stay on top of the ball as much as I could.”

On helping teammates out after a 3-hit game

“Well, they are all righties, most of them. I can’t give them advice. She was spinning the ball a lot; I could see it when I was on base. I couldn’t give that much advice.”

USF Senior P Lindsey Richardson

On her game

“I was a little nervous because it was the first game of regionals. I think it just took a few pitches. You’re not at home; you’re at a new ballpark with the umpire and their strike zone, getting your foot on the mound – after getting comfortable, it gets easier.”

On advancing

“Getting the first win I think that’s the most important because starting off with a win is a lot better than starting off with a loss. I think it just gets us the confidence we need at Regionals. A win is a win.”

Georgia Southern Head Coach Annie Smith

Opening Statement

It was a good game, an eight inning game at regionals. We went toe-to-toe with them. Sarah pitched her heart out, we played solid on defense. Obviously I knew going in that USF had a great pitching staff and that it was going to be tough. We went toe to toe for eight innings so you can’t ask much more than that.

On how the team has played going into extra innings this year

“We have been in so many of them we just keep playing. We just keep going. As long as you pitch you have a shot and that is what we tell them. We are not going to get nervous in that situation. We just played two eleven-inning games last weekend to get here. We are used to it.”

On expecting the pitching battle

“Yes I thought it would be. We match up. He has a great pitching staff. I have a great pitching staff. When you get to Regionals, honestly every body has a great pitching staff. You don’t see very many big inning games so it is fun. It is the nature of the beast I guess.”

On the final play

“You know I walked out there before and said the one at third, we can’t let her score. Don’t worry about the back runner. I knew they were going to squeeze. We worked on it this week and sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn’t. It just worked for them. We were ready for it. It wasn’t like we got caught off guard. Sometimes it happens.”

On the 18 strikeouts being frustrating

“It probably was. That is a good pitching staff so they strike out a lot of people. It was frustrating at times. I think they kept battling and made adjustments. They moved around in the box, did some things. We started to battle. Some of those things, we are a young program as far as being at Regionals and facing tougher teams. This is our second year of doing that. The better pitching we can face the better we will get so it will make us better down the road.”

On how playing tough schedule has helped team coming into regionals

“No doubt at all. We have already played Alabama, LSU, Florida State, Minnesota, and Wisconsin so we have played them all. We played South Florida last year. We are not afraid of anybody and that is the only way we are going to get better. They are confident and I think you could tell they were comfortable out there. That is all you can do is prepare them and hope the score goes your way.”
