Coach and Player Quotes
May 19, 2012
Florida used a pair of home runs from Lauren Haeger to help them to a 7-1 victory over UCF in game four of the Gainesville Regional.
The Gators advance to play Florida Gulf Coast in game five of the regional at 6:35 p.m. The Knights have been eliminated and finish their season with a 39-19 overall record.
UCF Head Coach Renee Luers-Gillispie
Opening Statement: “It was not the type of finish that we wanted in the regional. Florida is a really tough team and we knew that coming into the series. I thought that we had a really good season overall. As a young team with five freshmen starting for us, I think we have a bright future ahead of us.”
On the team’s depth and hitting production: “It’s always tough. We have been battling that for the last six games. When we get down to the bottom of the lineup we just haven’t been seeing production this year. It’s confidence as a hitter – you need to have the confidence to want to be the hitter and want to score. It comes back to recruiting, and the kids that are coming back next year. These kids that are coming back are going to have a lot of challenges to keep their spots – we have 11 freshmen coming in next year. Also, a lot of our lineup is freshmen – they’re scared – it’s always a learning process.”
On Florida’s efforts: “Florida is always a tough hitting team. I think they’re a little bit down, right now they’re going through a lot of things that Tim is dealing with and that’s not easy. They looked better today than they did yesterday – that confidence is coming back a little bit. It just wasn’t our day, and Florida got the key when they needed to – it’s a combination of the two.”
On Seniors Natalie Land and Vanessa Perez: “They have both been with us from the start – they have worked so hard to not only build as freshmen but to teach the five freshmen that are starting for us the experience that it takes to make it back here. It’s a different atmosphere if you’ve never been here. With that, if you never have been, you don’t know how to get back. This is probably the nicest group of girls that I have ever had the opportunity to coach – it’s been a joy to have this group of girls with me this year.”
UCF Freshman Pitcher Mackenzie Audus
On the two homers: “The first one she hit a change-up and I left it up there for here and she made the best of it. On the second one I gave her my best pitch and she hit it. That happens sometimes.”
On bouncing back: “It’s definitely tough to bounce back sometimes. Today I didn’t bounce back how I wanted to. I’ll have to learn from that and bring that into next year.”
On her debut season as a collegiate athlete: “It’s been an awesome freshman season. I couldn’t ask for a better team. It’s been a great year, more than I expected, I’m really happy with this year.”
On the experience: “I just want to learn from it and learn from the tough situations that we had. We need to grow, and then take this next year and teach it to our freshmen so they don’t make the same mistakes next year.”
