Coach and Player Quotes
May 19, 2012
USF pounded out 12 hits, from seven different players, scoring eight runs to down Florida Gulf Coast 8-3 in the opening game of Day Two of the Gainesville Regional.
With the win USF advances to tomorrow championship game which begins at 1 p.m., while FGCU will face the winner of UCF and Florida at 6 p.m. this evening.
USF Head Coach Ken Eriksen
“As we talked about it yesterday, the first inning is crucial. I thought Lindsay Richardson did a phenomenal job getting out of the situation with runs and scoring positions, and not letting one of the best hitters in Florida – Chelsea Zgrabik – at bat. We set the tone for us, and then the bats exploded. I don’t know what our team did last night dreaming-wise, but I’ll take it. That was a good situation for us. Right from the start today, I thought that Kenshyra Jackson set the tone for our team – once she got it going she was unstoppable.”
On getting two wins and a shot at Super Regionals:
“That’s conventional thinking for sure. The way that we have looked at it all year long is that we want to keep playing. The people that have been following us all year can understand that we just want to keep playing good softball – no matter how many innings we play.
“Today, I thought we played really well in six innings. If you take a look at how many hard hits have hurt us in the past few days – it’s really not that many. You have to give credit to the other teams – they’re staying aggressive. Luckily, the bad-luck bug hasn’t bit us yet and hopefully it won’t. We have to keep on playing.”
On the pitching situation:
“If you think about the teams that we have played the past few weeks, we have seen some pretty good pitching. A couple of the pitchers that we faced in the past prepared us for this weekend. If you looked at our schedule, it would be very hard to say that we have faced one type of pitcher. I think that we have prepared pretty well for this – that is why you make your schedule the way that you do.”
On the game strategy:
“Avoid the kids that can score runs by keeping them off the base as much as possible, and avoid the kids that are good hitters for the other teams. Sometimes you take a look at the scorebook – and you see that our pitchers did a very good job against the teams that we are playing.”
USF Junior Infielder Kenshyra Jackson
On keeping the lineup rolling:
“It felt really great to actually move the runners over and help my team out. It has been a struggle, but you just keep going up there and keep hitting.”
USF Senior Outfielder Gina Kafalas
On setting the tone of the game:
“Every at-bat is exciting to be in. With that particular bat, Coach was just telling me to drive the ball. I hit the ball, saw it go out to right field and ran as fast as I could.”
On being a senior in the NCAA Regional:
“We want to finish strong – that has been our motto the past few weeks. We’re all excited to be here – we want to go out with a big bang. We want to be here, and we want to finish strong.”
