Robert E. Liessem, Jr.

Volunteer Assistant Coach


Robert E. Liessem, Jr. returns in 2010 for his second fall as the University of Florida’s volunteer assistant coach, handling the goalkeepers.

In his first season with Florida in 2009, UF’s Katie Fraine ranked first among the Southeastern Conference’s goalkeepers with her 0.61 goals against average in league play. She was a first team selection for both 2009 All-SEC and National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) All-South Region squads plus was a first-team selection for TopDrawerSoccer.com National Team of the Season.

Before joining Florida in 2009, Liessem served as the head goalkeeper coach for the Virginia ODP from 2002 to 2007. While serving as the head coach, Liessem was also the assistant coach and goalkeeper coach of Old Dominion University for the 2003 and 2004 season. In 2005, he took the assistant and goalkeeper coaching position for the women’s soccer team at George Mason University.  Beginning in 1998, Liessem served four years as the goalkeeping coach for the New Jersey Olympic Development Program. He has also coached at various camps, including the Premier Goalkeeping School and the Elite Soccer Academy.

A native to New Jersey, Liessem was a promising soccer player and gained recognition by receiving all-league, all-area, all-county and all-state honors during high school at Indian Hills. He was named to the annual North South All-Star match in 1983. Liessem also participated in the semi-pro men’s leagues from 1985-89.

Liessem continued to pursue his soccer career while attending college at Longwood University, earning all-league, all-state and all-south teams during his four years with the Lancers. He still holds Longwood’s record for fewest goals allowed in a season with 15 in 1985.

In 1987, he graduated from Longwood with his bachelor’s degree in business administration.
