Associate Coach

Danielle Fotopoulos

Danielle Fotopoulos, 29, a U.S. National Team member and the NCAA All-Time Division I goals and points leader, returns to the University of Florida soccer team as an assistant coach in 2005.

Fotopoulos finished her collegiate career by scoring the game-winning goal in UF's 1-0 win over North Carolina in the 1998 NCAA Championship match. That goal set her final collegiate totals at 118 goals and 284 points - both which still rank as the NCAA Division I leader for women's or men's soccer. Fotopoulos picked up several top honors in 1998, including the Honda Award and the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) Player of the Year. The three-time NSCAA All-American also picked up the 1996 and '98 Southeastern Conference Player of the Year awards in her two seasons with the Gator team (she played her first two seasons at SMU). She still owns UF season records for goals (34), game-winning goals (11), points (81) and shots (146).

Fotopoulos' soccer career continued with the U.S. National Team and WUSA (professional women's soccer league that existed from 2001-03) following her collegiate career. She was a member of the U.S. team that claimed the 1999 World Cup gold medal in front of a sell-out Rose Bowl crowd. One of the 20 founding players for the WUSA, Fotopoulos was placed on the Carolina Courage team. Fotopoulos scored the second goal in the Carolina Courage's 3-2 win over the Washington Freedom in the 2002 WUSA championship match. Fotopoulos ranks second all-time in the WUSA with 56 points, scoring 20 goals and tallying 16 assists.

She rejoined the U.S. National Team this spring after recovering from a torn anterior cruciate ligament suffered in 2003 WUSA action. Fotopoulos has appeared in three 2005 U.S. National Team matches, turning in four goals. Fotopoulos joined her husband, George, and served as Co-Head Coach for the Louisiana State University women's soccer team for the 2004 season. The Tigers posted an 8-11-1 record last fall and the pair resigned in November of 2004.

Fotopoulos received her bachelor's degree in leisure management from UF in May of 1999. She and George have two children - Alexia Shea (4) and Vasilos George (1).
