Prior to the NCAA's sponsoring of women's championship events, the UF women ranked among the nation's top competitors as a member of the AIAW (Association for Intercollegiate Athletic for Women) from 1972 to 1982. In AIAW competition, Florida finished in the top-five six out of eight times, while winning the 1979 title. While a part of the AIAW, UF won a total of 15 event titles.
