1968 NCAA CHAMPIONS

June 17-22, 1968 University Golf Course New Mexico State University Las Cruces, N.M.

A fourth and final-round score of two-under par 69 by Richard Spears highlighted the Gators' upset of Houston for its first team title at the 71st Annual NCAA Championships. The two schools were tied after 54 holes and Houston held a one-stroke advantage after 63, but the 69th hole (a 525-yard, par five with a lake in front of the green) proved to be disaster for the Cougars.

Two Houston golfers bogeyed the hole while Florida's Spears and Steve Melnyk recorded birdies to give the Gators a commanding lead that carried them to the victory stand.
