SAAC Retreat

On August 20th the Student Athlete Advisory Council participated in their annual SAAC Retreat in the Champions Club. The retreat kicked off with a scavenger hunt around campus, members were broken up into pre-established groups and given a list of activities to complete. The scavenger hunt gave the members a chance to practice teamwork and get acclimated to one another again. After the completion of the scavenger hunt and winners were announced, a pizza dinner was served, and agendas were passed out.

Thirty-five SAAC members from ten different sports attended the SAAC Retreat giving the members an opportunity to start the year on the same foot. President Cameron Martin and Vice President Kelsey Horton took members through the agenda which included: an assessment of the previous school years SAAC initiatives, introduction to SAAC events, and new action items. New to the SAAC Retreat agenda were the establishment of committees and a discussion on higher attendance expectations for SAAC Representatives.  Members were assigned to the five committees and allowed time to discuss committee goals and action items for the upcoming year.

After group discussions the entire SAAC was addressed by President Cameron Martin about his goals and expectations for the 2012-2013 SAAC. His goals included increasing campus involvement, hosting more SAAC events for student-athletes, and increasing the knowledge of SAAC to peers and administration. The SAAC Retreat concluded with a review of the action items and warm wishes for the semester.

Adopt-A-Team

As a commitment to evolving and expanding Student-Athlete Advisory Committee events the Adopt-A-Team Committee was established to revive Adopt-A-Team practices. During the Spring Semester the Adopt-A-Team changed the expectations for themselves as a committee and event. The Adopt-A-Team events are a highlighted event for each of the 17 sports teams, encouraging student-athletes, coaches and faculty to attend the event. Committee members make an effort to decorate locker rooms and posters for the highlighted teams before the event and work a table with sign in sheets and poster decoration supplies for student-athletes during the event. Thus far over 100 student-athletes have participated.

Pep Rally

The 2nd annual Pep Rally looked to build off the success of last year. This year with a new location, new ideas, and new planning Chair, Haley Reeb from women’s soccer, this year’s Pep Rally established itself as a new tradition on campus. Planning meetings during the summer and multimedia promotions helped make the October 3rd pep rally a huge success.

Over seventy student-athletes and two hundred students were in the crowd as Olympian Tony McQuay led the crowd in the fight songs and introduction of Fall sports. The Pride of the Sunshine hype band and cheerleaders entertained students from all over campus in a pre-game like atmosphere.

2012-2013 Florida Letterman Awards

The Florida Letterman Awards serves as an ESPY-like event where student-athlete accomplishments are recognized and awarded. On April 1, 2013 the fourth annual Florida Letterman Awards took place at the Phillips Center for the Performing Arts. Over 200 student-athletes and UAA staff attended the event organized by Soccer Junior, Haley Reeb. The event was hosted by Jenn Brown, the former softball student-athlete turned sports host.

The night was highlighted by a Lacrosse Dance performance, Justin Bieber and Nicki Minaj concert, DJ, Photo Fun Booth, and desserts. Student-athletes were able to live tweet on the display screen about their favorite moments during the event using the hashtag #FLAS2013. 2013 Student-athletes and staff were able to submit videos to show during the award show.

This year introduced attendees to the The Florida Way Award, given to the student-athlete from each team whom exemplified qualities like honesty, integrity, strong work ethic, and compassion. Teams nominated someone from their team who encompassed everything a student-athlete at the University of Florida was supposed to represent.

Over 400 student-athletes and support staff attended this year’s event.
