2012 Lacrosse NCAA Championship
Syracuse 14, Florida 13 - 2OT
NCAA Semfinals – May 25, 2012
Florida Head Coach Amada O’Leary
Congratulations to Syracuse. It was a great game and a game of runs. They scored when it counted and had a fantastic come back. We knew they wouldn’t give up and they competed hard. I’m proud of my team and proud of our season as this is just the third year of the program.
On calling a stick check in previous meeting against Syracuse…
No I don’t remember it, it was a really long time ago.
On a game of runs…
They were driving hard to goal. We weren’t organized nor did we slide or help on the defensive breakdowns. We needed to come up with important draw controls.
On Mikey Meagher’s play in goal…
She literally kept us in the game after a few doorstep saves. She made a huge save for us from her knees as well. Mikey played a tremendous game, and was a shining star over 60 minutes.
On the Process regarding stick checks…
Officials can call stick checks whenever they want, same as coaches. I agree with Syracuse not much you can do about it.
Florida Midfielder Brittany Dashiell
On Stick Check Play…
A smart play by Syracuse, we couldn’t do anything about it just play and get next grounder
Florida Goalie Mikey Meagher
On coming to Florida and making the NCAA Final Four….
Getting here means everything. I knew we were going places when I stepped onto campus in Gainesville. It’s terrible that we lost, but we are definitely going places.
Florida Midfielder Shannon Gilroy
On Syracuse’s coverage…
In the first half they weren’t pressuring, but in the second half they heavily pressured us. We had to play with each other as a team.
On coming back to Long Island…
It’s been an awesome experience to have a crowd cheering you on. It’s a comforting experience.
Syracuse Head Coach Gary Gait
First off, you have to give credit to the Florida Gators. They came out focused, their goalie was outstanding, she put us back on our heels, and really made our offense really second guess their shooting and defensively we struggled against their dodge from the top. We did well on everything else but we weren’t scoring on the offensive end and giving up some easy opportunities on the defensive end. At halftime, the players came together and they didn’t give up. We talked about believing and we did it last week so we believed we could do it again. With a little bit of luck, drive and heart we were able to come out on top. It is an amazing feeling to come out on top. This kind of heart never gives up. I’m very proud of them.
I’ve been involved in a lot of champs some times it takes divine intervention, luck to win. Alyssa Murray makes a big call and that gave us some life. We fought to the very end to do whatever it took. Sometimes it takes a lucky bounce and we kept getting them. Sarah Holden buried that lost shot…Im proud of her for not giving up and believing she could get it done and she did.
This [win] is one of the all-time greats and brings me back to the glory days back at Syracuse. This one is just incredible what this group has been able to do, especially these past two games. They can enjoy this for the next two minutes, then on to the next one.
We were down 3 w/ 3 min. We did this last week. It’s always nice when you have a reference point to prove your point. They played from behind last week and it gave them the confidence to come back this week. We were doing everything we could do to come back.
We made some adjustments on Gilroy in the second have and made sure she didn’t win the draws. We were concerned about them off the draw. Kayla did her job off the draw.
Florida called a stick check on us, the stick was legal and we won the game. The good thing was our sticks were legal and that was a crucial error on their part.
Syracuse Attacker Alyssa Murray
On lack of scoring…
I was just tying to let the game come to me…If I wait for my opportunity, it will come. And I don’t really care if I score in every game, as long as we win.
Syracuse Attacker Michelle Tumolo
I ran over to the ref a little crazed for the stick check. She checked it and it was illegal….Teams have done it to us. If it’s the winning goal, if there’s anything you can do to bring it back. We were fighting for our life and it was something you have to do.
It’s been our motto all year, we look each other in the eye and we don’t give up. They could tell I was upset I didn’t score that last goal but they said to me we are not going to lose this game.. No one was negative…they kept me sane. That’s why we were so successful and pull out these wins...I couldn’t ask for a better team.
Syracuse Attacker Kailah Kempney
We all have our role on the field. We have a lot of communication on the field so we’re all on the same page. When I would pull it over my shoulder, there were so many people around. The smartest place to put it was to the side of me. So my teammates boxed out and allowed me to control the draw.
Regarding Shannon Gilroy: She’s a very good self drawer and she has goo d size and very good stick work so we wanted to take away her and being able to self draw. They have very good transition and we wanted to take that away.
Syracuse Attacker Sarah Holden
It was an emotional roller coaster out on the field. Down by seven, potentially your last game and being able to pull it out, it’s such an amazing feeling. I’m so proud of my team.
It [overtime] was all in slow motion. I remember we were in our set offense and the goalie went down and made a save and I was certain that it would not happen to me again. So I did a split/dodge and buried it low and it went in. It was an amazing feeling.
