New Florida basketball coach Billy Donovan, just 31 years old, held his first practice with the Gators.
[That's "Billy the Kid," back when he was really a kid, on the basketball preview issue of 'Gator Bait' that season.]
Donovan, who came to UF after two seasons at Marshall, had very little to work with, with his starting five that year eventually being Greg Stolt and Damen Maddox up front and a three-man backcourt of Eddie Shannon, Greg Williams and Dan Williams. Walk-on Joel Reinhart got considerable playing time.
Billy D's first team went 11-17.
Things got better.
