Freshman quarterback Danny Wuerffel, playing in just his second college game, threw a 28-yard touchdown pass to walk-on wideout Chris Doering with three seconds left to push the Gators past Kentucky for a 24-20 road victory in the SEC opener for both teams.

On a night that Florida became just the second team in NCAA history to win a game with seven interceptions, Wuerffel relieved starter Terry Dean after Dean threw his fourth pick.

And while Wuerffel tossed three of his own, he found Doering when it matter most.

“I wasn’t thinking about the interceptions, you got to look forward,” Wuerffel beamed. “Now, it’s jubilation, excitement, pure joy, that’s what I feel.”

Just like that, a virtual unknown went from goat to hero.

What became a Heisman-worthy career was launched.

"We were very fortunate,” Coach Steve Spurrier said. “The other team outplayed us, but somehow we made a play at the end of the game.”

Afterward, a dejected Dean knew the performance had cost him his job, yet found some concilation.

“I would have felt 50 times worse if we lost,” he said.

Wuerffel-Doering[On a personal note, this game holds particular meaning to me. I covered the UF athletics program for The Tampa Tribune and Orlando Sentinel for the entire decade of the 1990s, when the Gators played 125 football games. I was on hand to chronicle 124 of them. I couldn't make the game in Lexington that night. I stayed back in Gainesville for the birth of my daughter, Molly, who checked in about three hours before kickoff. Last month, we checked her into a UF dorm for freshman year. That's Wuerffel and Doering (pictured right), with Molly, one year later. Happy birthday, sweetheart.]
