Derek de la Pena
VOLUNTEER ASSISTANT COACH
Entering his first season with the Florida men's golf program, Volunteer Assistant Coach Derek de la Pena will provide the team with coaching from another standpoint--mental preparation for golf. De la Pena, who worked with the women's program last year as a volunteer assistant coach, will work with both programs this season.
"The men's team has a lot of talented players. I'm looking forward to helping each golfer discover his 'thinking' potential," de la Pena said.
De la Pena arrived at the University of Florida in 1997 as a doctorate student in sports psychology. He has coached a wide variety of sports as part of his teaching assistantship, including golf, racquet sports, softball, jogging, basketball, volleyball and weight training. Additionally, he is teaching a performance enhancement sport psychology class in the fall.
De la Pena enjoys playing golf, running marathons, and most recently triathlon training.
Native of Edinburg, Texas, de la Pena graduated from the University of Texas in 1993 with a bachelor's degree in psychology. In 1996 he earned his master's degree in psychology from Stephen F. Austin State University. He is in his final year of doctoral work for his Ph.D. at Florida.
