- Comments From The University Of Florida Signing
Day Press Conference
- Head Coach Steve Spurrier
"We had another solid class, we don't have to cancel football in the year 2000 now."
"We got some ballplayers that are going to be ready to play. Some of them will play early, some a little later, but it was another solid class for us. We're excited about the ones that did come. They should fit in well with our team and I think a lot of them are going to be outstanding student-athletes here at Florida."
"We'll find out how good a recruiting class four years from now."
- Recruiting Coordinator Jim Collins
"As Coach said, we set out in this class to fill the needs and cover the needs of our football team at each position. We felt like with this class we were able to accomplish that."
"We categorized that trying to help our football team in all areas was the primary thing that we did and we feel like with this class that we were able to do that. You just have to look and see that we took a quarterback, a tailback, a fullback, a wide receiver, a couple offensive linemen, and combination offensive and defensive lineman, really about six of those combinations in there. About three linebackers, a couple defensive backs. Really we helped ourselves overall at each position."
"It is a very, very good class. With the 16 that we have right now, there are 10 in-state and six out-of-state. It is a solid class. Once again, our staff did an outstanding job recruiting and the same excellent job that they always do. We think some of these young men will have a chance to help us down the line. All of them will have the opportunity to come in and compete."
About the importance of finishing strong in the process:
"We've had that tendency in years past and I think it is due to a couple of reasons."
"One, we do not have any official visits during the month of December. We've been fortunate enough to be involved in a championship game each of the last four years that has really run us into our exam period and we do not like to bring prospects on campus during an exam period because we don't think it's fair to them to see the university as it is at that time. And we don't think it's fair to our players that we would request to host them during that time. Therefore, we do everything in the month of January to space those visits out. We were able to space our visits out over four weekends within the month and when you do that, the process gets carried on a little bit later."
"I think one other factor is that we've had the opportunity to go out and recruit some of the best players in the country and a lot of times the very, very good players tend to make decisions a little bit later. Not to say that the ones that make early decisions are not good players, but sometimes the very highly recruited ones, some of them, tend to go a little bit longer than others."
About the wealth of talent on the defensive line:
"We hope that this class will help us move in the direction where we are strong up front defensively."
"Last year's class was very solid and has shown a great deal of potential to be a very good class in the defensive line area. We'll know a little bit more after spring practice with that group when we see that they get to become the front line guys and see them perform."
"We really feel like that it's a step in the direction that we needed to take to make sure that we're solid in that area."
