Profile on Jarvis Moss

  • Moss was a Parade All-America defensive end coming out of high school from Denton, Texas. He was red-shirted as a freshman in 2003 after suffering a hernia and hip problems, and in 2004 he battled numerous hip and groin injuries. In 2005, the UF sports health staff discovered a rare pelvic bone infection that caused him to drop 20-to-30 pounds and had him thinking about quitting the game. The UF sports health staff targeted the problem back to a preexisting injury from high school and treated it very aggressively for 6-to-8 weeks. For a six-week period he had an around the clock IV that had strong antibiotics to fight the infection. Since he missed preseason drills, the coaching staff and UF sports health staff didn't anticipate him playing until the middle of the year, however he recovered ahead of schedule and played in the final series of the Tennessee game (third game of the season). He went on to finish fifth in the SEC and tops on the team in sacks with 7.5.
  • A prep All-American at Ryan High School in Denton, Texas, Moss signing with Florida was a bit of a shock, as that area of the country is predominantly controlled by the Big 12.

What They Are Saying About Jarvis Moss

“I want us to win. That’s really the only goal I have – to win. I want our seniors to go out big on top. I just want to get better. I want to prove to the football world, to the fans, to the media or whatever, that the Gators are one of those teams up there.” (2006)
Jarvis Moss

“No one knows how good Moss might be this season. His potential is limitless. He had a breakthrough last year off the field that helped him get back on it. He could become one of the most feared defensive ends in the Southeastern Conference this season.” (8/27/06)
Mike Phillips, Miami Herald

“Unbelievable. Maybe as good as I have ever seen as far as lifestyle, work ethic and attitude. To think of where he is right now with his leadership and effort, he is the top one percent of one percent.” (8/15/06)
Urban Meyer, UF Head Coach

“Jarvis is very explosive, has very good speed and plays his butt off in practice. When you’ve got those three things, you’ve got a special player.” (8/10/06)
Greg Mattison, UF Co-Defensive Coordinator and Defensive Line Coach

“We can not afford to lose him. He had a tremendous spring. He’s a terrific pass rusher, and those guys are hard to come by. He played OK last year. He was flashy at times in the pass rush, but he couldn’t play against the run. He’s one of the most improved guys on the team.” (July 2006)
Urban Meyer, UF Head Coach

“He has a lot of potential. I hate using that word, but he’s blessed with a lot of things.” (July 2006)
Greg Mattison, UF Co-Defensive Coordinator and Defensive Line Coach

“Moss had more bulk to his frame and was a terror in his first full spring session. The Gators will devise ways to free up Moss at the “Fox” to make plays as he takes aim on Alex Brown’s single-season school sack record of 13 set in 1999. All indications are that if Moss stays off the injured list, his numbers could skyrocket this season.” (July 2006)
Marty Cohen, Gatorbait

“If he continues to improve and gain size and strength, he could be a dominant player in the SEC this season and one of the nation’s most feared pass rushers. Moss looks like he’s got big-time NFL potential, and could get an early ticket to the league if he has a big year.” (4/23/06)
Robbie Andreu, The Gainesville Sun

“The 6-foot-7 Moss, who has been wreaking some havoc on the scout team, has gained 20 pounds since he's been at UF and could help generate a stronger pass rush with his excellent speed." (September 10, 2003)
Robbie Andreu, Gainesville Sun

"He's got potential.  He has a tremendous upside to him- if he gets a little bigger and stronger he can be a great pass rusher.  He's kind of a Jevon Kearse-type kid." (February 14, 2003)
Joey Florence, Ryan HS coach

"He's a guy who's going to be a very talented individual. He's a knuckle-dragger. He's got big old long arms. He's going to be big. I hope we can get an opportunity where we can look at him on the edge. He can run." (September 11, 2003)
Ron Zook, Former UF Head Coach
