Profile on Ray McDonald

  • Had surgery on the torn anterior cruciate ligament in each knee following the 2005 season. Dr. Peter Indelicato repaired one knee just after Thanksgiving and the other five weeks later. The staggered surgeries allowed for McDonald to rehabilitate both knees at the same time. His care then shifted to head athletic trainer and physical therapist Susan Tillman, who nicknamed him “Bionic Man”
  • Father Ray McDonald played wide receiver for the Gators in the mid-80s, and was featured on the cover of Sports Illustrated (Nov. 11, 1985) after catching both scores in a 14-10 victory at Auburn in 1985. Little Ray was only one at the time.
  • Grandfather played running back at Bethune Cookman, uncle was a cornerback at UCF and currently has a cousin playing cornerback at FAMU.
  • Favorite food is his mom’s spaghetti

What They Are Saying About Ray McDonald

Where's Ray McDonald? Can I say what Ray McDonald said? Can I quote you, Ray? Okay, I will. (Laughter.) Here's what he said: ‘We don't really believe in destiny. We believe when your number is called, you make the play.’ What he's saying is, is that there's no chance. ‘We win because we do what we're coached to do, and we're good at it.’ And I appreciate the spirit, and I appreciate the caliber -- (applause) -- of people on this team.” (3/19/07)
President George W. Bush, 43rd president of the United States

“I’m just trusting my coaches. I’m not scared, because if I was scared I’d be worrying about my knees all the time and wouldn’t be trying to be a good player this year. I’ve just got to try to not think about my knees and go hard.” (8/11/06)
Ray McDonald

“I have the utmost respect for what he’s done. I can’t say it enough. I’ve had guys who had one ACL (surgery) and had tough times coming back, especially guys that had such high goals and had so much talent. He’s a guy who has had both of them fixed and is really on track to do it all. Whether he can, we won’t know until he gets hit a few times, until it gets real sore, until he tweaks it a little. Right now you couldn’t ask a guy to do anything more than he’s done, rehabbing and getting strong.” (July 2006)
Greg Mattison, UF Co-Defensive Coordinator and Defensive Line Coach

“Ray has done an excellent job. The doctors and strength coaches have really done a super job getting his knees rehabbed. Ray is really, really upbeat. He’s lifting. He’s doing everything. He’s 100 percent cleared to play.”
Greg Mattison, UF Co-Defensive Coordinator and Defensive Line Coach

“In all the years I’ve been coaching defensive linemen, he may be as good as any I’ve been around.”
Greg Mattison, UF Co-Defensive Coordinator and Defensive Line Coach
