The Gators’ new coaching staff is busy getting ready for the season opener on Sept. 3 against Florida Atlantic.
First-year coach Will Muschamp hired a veteran staff heavy on NFL experience that has Gator fans optimistic entering the 2011 season.
What about the coaches no longer here from last year’s staff? Chuck from Daytona asked if I could provide an update on their whereabouts, so I figured it would make good blog.
If anyone else out there is wondering what they are up to, here is an update inspired by Chuck from Daytona:
--Urban Meyer is spending the 2011 season as a college football analyst for ESPN. This Philadelphia Enquirer columnist – and huge Joe Paterno fan – hopes Paterno turns the Penn State program over to Meyer in 2012.
--Dan McCarney hopes to rebuild North Texas into a bowl team and fill the Mean Green’s new stadium regularly. Click here for a story on McCarney entering his first season from the Fort Worth Star-Telegram.
--Former Gators offensive coordinator Steve Addazio is now head coach at Temple. The Owls had their first scrimmage on Saturday and here is video of Addazio talking about his team.
--Chuck Heater joined Addazio at Temple as defensive coordinator and takes over a unit that lost six starters from last year’s team. Click here to read more on Heater’s defense from Philly.com.
--Former Gators defensive coordinator Teryl Austin landed in Baltimore as the Ravens’ secondary coach. Click here to watch video of Austin meeting Baltimore’s top pick in the draft, Colorado DB Jimmy Smith. (Austin appears in second half of clip).
--Former Gators receivers coach Zach Azzanni is now offensive coordinator at Western Kentucky and relying heavily on quarterback Kawaun Jakes to manage the Hilltoppers’ West Coast offense efficiently. Click here to read a story from the Bowling Green (Kent.) Daily News.
--Stan Drayton coached Gators running backs Jeff Demps and Chris Rainey last season; he is now at Ohio State coaching the Buckeyes wide receivers. Click here to watch video of Drayton from BuckeyGrove.com.
--Former Gators quarterbacks coach Scot Loeffler is also at Temple and a first-year offensive coordinator for the Owls. Click here to read more on Loeffler’s offense from OwlSports.com.
The three remaining members of Meyer's final staff at UF -- Brian White, D.J. Durkin and Mickey Marotti -- are still with the Gators on Muschamp's staff.
