Thursday June 2, 2011 Michelle Moultrie has surpassed all expectations according to Gators coach Tim Walton

Updated: 4:40pm, June 2

The press conference turned silent for about 20 seconds as Gators softball coach Tim Walton tried to regain his composure.

This happened Saturday afternoon shortly after a reporter asked Walton about the contributions of center field Michelle Moultrie.

In Saturday’s Super Regional-clinching win over Oregon, Moultrie had three hits, two runs, an RBI and added a stolen base. She also made an outstanding catch-and-throw double play from her spot in center field.

“Michelle means so much,’’ Walton said, his voice cracking and eyes watery.

Following the pause, Walton soon finished up his thoughts on Moultrie, a former walk-on who has emerged as a catalyst at the top of the Gators’ lineup with her speed and a .431 batting average.

“My gut was that she was going to be good and she’s better than anybody could have ever expected,’’ Walton said. “The kid could barely catch a cold her freshman year and she’s come so far and she’s got so much talent.’’

Besides her offensive contributions – Moultrie has a team-high 28 stolen bases to go with her 88 hits – Moultrie’s defense has been superb. She uses her speed to track down balls that others don’t get to and she has a plus arm.

Moultrie will likely play a key role for the Gators if they are going to make a deep run at the Women's College World Series. The Gators open against Missouri tonight at 9. The game will be shown live on ESPN2 and online at ESPN3.com.

This from a player who had to try out for the team in 2009 after enrolling at UF out of Mandarin High in Jacksonville.

“I just can’t believe that one individual could be that good in such a short period of time,’’ Walton said. “It’s unbelievable. You can’t even measure how much she means to our program, how much she’s done for where we’re at and hopefully where we’re going.”
