GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Gators coach Will Muschamp said Wednesday that sophomore quarterback Jacoby Brissett will start Saturday’s game against Jacksonville State in place of injured starter Jeff Driskel.

Driskel suffered a right ankle injury in the win over Louisiana and was replaced by Brissett in the third quarter. Driskel has not been able to practice this week.

“He can’t get on the practice field bytoday, and if you can’t go by Wednesday, you don’t need to play,’’ Muschamp said. “You certainly don’t need to start. Again, I’ve got all the confidence in the world in Jacoby. He’ll play well and he’s prepared himself.”

In relief of Driskel against the Ragin’ Cajuns, Brissett finished 6 of 8 for 64 yards and a touchdown.

Brissett technically started the season opener against Bowling Green before giving way to Driskel after the first snap. This will be his first start expecting to play the entire game since last season at Auburn.

As for Driskel’s ankle injury, Muschamp said he continues to rehab to see if he can get healthy in time to play in the regular-season finale at Florida State on Nov. 24.

“We’re just working through this week and it’s day-to-day,’’ Muschamp said. “Whenever you deal with an ankle, it’s a day-to-day process. It’s a situation that continues to improve. How much it will improve into next week, I have no idea at this time. We feel like he will be available, but who knows.

“I’ve got a lot of confidence in Jacoby and it’s his opportunity and looking forward to seeing him play.”

Meanwhile, Muschamp also ruled receiver Andre Debose (knee), linebacker Neiron Ball (ankle) and defensive back Pop Saunders (undisclosed) out for Saturday’s game. Defensive back Valdez Showers (shoulder) and offensive lineman Ian Silberman (shoulder) are questionable, and starting offensive linemen Xavier Nixon (knee) and James Wilson (knee) are probably according to Muschamp after missing last week’s game.
