Thursday October 18, 2012Wuerffel impressed by way Driskel has played

Updated: 3:55pm, October 18

Gators quarterback Jeff Driskel will make his sixth career start on Saturday. With No. 9-ranked South Carolina in town, it will be Driskel’s biggest start to date.

Driskel has not thrown for more than 100 yards since Florida’s 38-0 win over Kentucky when he finished 18 of 27 for 203 yards. Still, the sophomore from Oviedo is finding other ways to help Florida win.

In last week’s win at Vanderbilt, Driskel rushed for 177 yards, a school record for a Gators quarterback.

After Florida’s 14-6 win over No. 4-ranked LSU earlier this month, Driskel revealed that he has spoken to former UF quarterbacks Chris Leak and Danny Wuerffel about playing quarterback at Florida and some of the challenges that come with that.

Wuerffel won the Heisman Trophy in 1996 and led the Gators to their first national title.

What does he think about the way Driskel has performed as Florida’s first-year starter?

“I can't express how impressed I've been with Jeff's development,’’ Wuerffel said via email Wednesday. “Along with the nation, I watched him make unbelievable strides over the first 3 games. And he's just continued his outstanding play.

“His combination of passing and running skills, along with his ability to both make big plays yet not make many mistakes, are very rare in a young QB. We are lucky to have him.”
