Lonnika (luh-KNEE-kuh) Thompson is a quick guard who made an immediate impact in 2007-08, her first season with the Gators, and followed that two more solid years when she was named the team’s Most Improved Player in 2008-09 and was the recipient of the Miss Elliott Unsung Hero Award in 2009-10 by the coaching staff … paid her own way to attend "Point Guard College" from Aug. 5-8, 2008, in Greenwood, S.C., where she participated in the "Think the Game" session … officially announced her intentions to attend UF on May 16, 2007 … her family was forced to evacuate New Orleans due to Hurricane Katrina and Thompson began her senior year at Jonesboro High School near Atlanta, Ga., before returning to McDonogh 35 High to complete her studies and receive her diploma … on target to earn her bachelor’s degree in sociology at the end of the 2010 Fall semester

Senior Year (2009-10)

Appeared in all 32 games and averaged 22.4 minutes … presented at the postseason banquet with the Miss Elliott Unsung Hero Award (team award) ... started the last 27 games - and 27 overall - first being inserted into the starting line-up at FIU (Nov. 29) ... scored in 27 games, including each of the last five ... contributed seven assists and six steals while playing a career-long 37 minutes during her collegiate finale at Miami (March 21) in the second round of the WNIT ... all six double-figure scoring games came during SEC regular-season action ... played a then-career-long 34 minutes in a 40-minute game in the SEC Tournament first round vs. Auburn (March 4) ... tallied her sixth double-figure scoring game in SEC action at Kentucky (Feb. 18), netting 10 points on 3-of-6 shooting ... contributed all 11 of her points in 10 minutes of overtime of a thrilling two-point double-overtime victory vs. Mississippi St. (Feb. 7), scoring all nine of UF’s points in the first overtime stanza and the first two points of the second overtime ... scored her 100th point of the season in the win at Mississippi St. (Jan. 17) ... held of streak of 12 consecutive games with at least one steal ... recorded back-to-back 12-point games (at Arkansas & vs. Auburn), her first two double-figure scoring games of the season ... clutch 12-point performance in the win against Auburn (Jan. 7), when she hit 3-of-4 free throws in the final 1:12 of the second overtime period, the last conversion coming with 22 seconds remaining that gave UF a five-point lead, shortly before the Tigers hit a three-pointer ... scored a season-high 12 points and tied for UF’s leading scorer in the game at Arkansas (Jan. 3), hitting one free throw with 19 seconds remaining to seal the six-point win ... tied her career-high with eight assists in 22 minutes played against Jacksonville (Dec. 30), also collecting three steals and scoring five points with only two turnovers ... in the game versus Ohio (Dec. 28), scored nine points with five assists to accompany her career-high seven steals, a mark that tied for the eighth-most steals in a game in UF history, as well as tied for the third-most steals in a home game and tied for most steals in a game (7) by a senior ... dished a career-high eight assists and scored eight points in 22 minutes of action in the win at Old Dominion (Dec. 11); converted 3-of-4 free throws in the final 53 seconds to help preserve the victory ... six double-figure scoring games

 

Junior Year (2008-09)

Appeared in all 32 games … started two games - the season opener and the Jan. 11 contest at Auburn, earning the nod to replace injured guard Jennifer Mossor ... first guard off the bench … scored in every game except two … team leader with 57 steals (1.8 per game) ... tied for-No. 2 in SEC games among league players for steals (2.07 pg) … hits 35.4 percent (28-79) from the three-point arc … appeared in both NCAA Tournament games, which included an 11-point performance in the second round against Connecticut (March 24) on 3-of-6 shooting from beyond the arc along with three assists ... all four career double-figure scoring games came this season … shot a steady 36.5 percent from the three-point arc (31-85), the second-highest among Gators who made at least 30 ... ranked third with 56 assists and fifth for minutes played (21.4 pg) ... sixth-leading scorer (6.1 pg), tops off the bench ... in the regular-season finale at Georgia (March 1), scored eight points and collected a career-high six rebounds ... had huge plays in the win against Tennessee (Feb. 8), as she collected two steals, grabbed three defensive rebounds (one with 19 seconds to go) and knocked down two free throws with 16 seconds remaining to stretch UF’s lead from seven to nine points ... matched her career-high of 16 points in the win at Arkansas (Feb. 1), hitting 3-of-5 from the three-point arc ... scored a career-high 16 points in the upset over No. 16/19 Pittsburgh (Dec. 21), hitting 5-of-6 from the floor, including 4-of-4 from behind the arc and both free throw attempts … tallied a then-career-high 13 points against Coppin State (Dec. 10), hitting 3-of-6 from the three-point arc … four double-figure scoring games.

 

Sophomore Year (2007-08)

Played in 32 of 33 games, earning 21 starting assignments, including the last six of the season …  averaged 16.1 minutes per game … her 50 assists and 41 steals ranked fourth on the team … hit 32.0 percent (16-50) from the three-point arc … suffered a separated shoulder against Auburn (Feb. 7) and missed the game at Mississippi State (Feb. 10) as a result … played just two minutes against Georgia (Feb. 14) and seven versus Arkansas (Feb. 17) in the next two contests following the injury … ended a streak of three straight scoreless games at the end of the season with eight points against Tennessee (March 7) in the quarterfinals of the SEC Tournament … scored a career-high nine points in the victory over Saint Louis (Dec. 22) ... credited with a career-high five assists against Alabama A&M (Dec. 29), after collecting a career-high six rebounds in a win over Holy Cross (Dec. 28).

 

Freshman Year (2006-07)

An academic qualifier out of high school, Thompson’s unusual circumstances during her final high school season due to Hurricane Katrina led her to Trinity Valley Community College in Athens, Texas, where she was recruited to replace Shannon Bobbitt, who left and became the starting point guard for Tennessee’s 2007 and 2008 national championship teams … Thompson spent one season with the Lady Cards, helping TVCC win its sixth consecutive Region XIV Conference championship ... earned a spot on the 2007 Women’s All-Region XIV and All-Conference teams after averaging 12 points and 6.2 assists per game and helping TVCC to a 24-7 record, including a 15-3 mark in conference play ... despite being hampered with an ankle injury, still managed seven points along with eight assists in TVCC’s final game, a 63-60 loss to Blinn College in the regional semifinal.

 

High School

Graduated from McDonogh 35 High School in 2006 after helping the Roneagles basketball team to the Louisiana state 5A championship game her senior year … collected 2005 Class 5A All-State first-team honors ... her prep career, however, was anything but usual, as Thompson and her family were forced to evacuate New Orleans due to Hurricane Katrina and she began her senior year at Jonesboro High School near Atlanta, Ga. … played for the Lady Cardinals hoops team until she was able to return home to New Orleans in February of 2006 to complete her prep playing career and earn her diploma from McDonogh 35, where she also played her sophomore and junior years.
