Darren Hertz

Director of Basketball Operations

Darren Hertz begins his third season as Director of Basketball Operations after spending seven seasons as Assistant to the Head Coach. Hertz is no stranger to the Gators, as he has served in various capacities since Billy Donovan’s first season in 1996-97.

In his current role, Hertz directs the day-to-day operations of Florida basketball. Along with such responsibilities as coordinating non-conference scheduling, organizing underclassman recruiting and planning team travel, Hertz also directs the annual Billy Donovan summer camps, oversees the team’s student managers and assists with video scouting.

After beginning his stint with the Gators as a student assistant/volunteer, Hertz became the program’s first Video Coordinator in 2001. In that role, he was responsible for breaking down film for the purpose of scouting opponents, as well as all edits of individual players, team and motivational videos and oversaw film exchange with each of the Gators’ opponents while coordinating the taping of games, practices and individual instruction.

Hertz was an assistant coach at PK Yonge High School in Gainesville during the 1999-2000 season, helping the school to the District Championship on a squad that included former Georgia Southern star Terry Williams. He was the head coach of Team Mercy Hospital in the Pharmed Men’s Collegiate Summer Basketball League in Miami, Fla., in 1997 and 1998 and earned “Up and Coming Coach” honors in the latter of the two seasons.

A native of Miami, Hertz was an All-Dade County point guard his senior year at Miami Killian High School. During his senior season he was backcourt mates with current Utah Jazz guard Raja Bell. Hertz graduated from the University of Florida in 1997 with a degree in sociology before getting his Master’s in sport management in 2001. He was an instructor for the University of Florida’s College of Health and Human Performance from 1999-2001 while earning his Master’s degree.

Hertz married the former Julie Vogelman of Merrick, N.Y., on Aug. 5, 2006. The couple has one son, Brandon Levi, born Feb. 1, 2010 and one daughter, Alexa Sara, born June 29, 2012.
