Game 2 - Florida 8, Stetson 3

Game 2 Recap

Junior Florida pitcher Bryan Ball (7-4) tossed 6.2 strong innings to pace the Gators (41-20) to an 8-3 victory over Stetson (35-27) in the opening round of the NCAA Regional Saturday at McKethan Stadium. Sophomore first baseman Matt LaPorta set a Florida single-season record with his 24th home run of the year and set a career high with four runs scored the game, which was delayed 15 hours from its original start time of 8:10 p.m. Friday due to inclement weather. The Hatters jumped on the board early with a run in the first, but Florida rallied with two runs in the second, highlighted by LaPorta's round-tripper. With the Gators leading 5-2, UF put together a three-run sixth inning, capped off by third baseman Brandon McArthur's two-run single. Stetson starter Chris Ingoglia took the loss for the Hatters to fall to 8-4 on the season.

Game 2 Quotes

Florida Head Coach Pat McMahon

Opening Statement:

"I am very proud of our ball club and the way they competed. Stetson really has a nice ball club and we have a lot of respect for their program. [Stetson] left hander [Chris Ingoglia] pitched strongly. The key for us was quality at-bats and winning counts. When Stetson scored today, we answered and that is something we really focus on. From a defensive perspective, we played very well. [Florida pitcher] Bryan Ball had a very gutsy outing and I'm very proud of his effort today."

On Florida's three-run sixth inning:

"We showed a lot of character and that's the resiliency of our ball club. We try to take advantage of situations and grab the moment. That is critical to being successful."

On sophomore first baseman Matt LaPorta setting UF's single-season home run record:

"I'm happy for him because of his work-ethic. He has worked so hard and he loves the moment -- he practices that. Matt has a high level of expectation. He is the one of the first guys on the field and one of the last to leave. He has had a lot of quality at-bats, but he also gets hits at very important times in games. He wants to be in that situation."

Florida Sophomore First Baseman Matt LaPorta

On Florida's opening-round win:

"I thought it was a good battle today. Both teams played their hearts out and Stetson didn't give up until the last out was made."

On his two-run home run in the first inning:

"It was a good pitch on a 2-2 count. I was sitting on an off-speed pitch and I was lucky. It was a good feeling, but we still have to go out and win games and continue to play hard."

Florida Junior Pitcher Bryan Ball

On Ball allowing only one walk in the game:

"That's huge. You don't ever want to put people on base or give out free passes. I was struggling a bit with my fastball today, but I was able to force it in there and make Stetson put the ball in play."

Stetson Head Coach Pete Dunn

On Saturday's performance:

"We came out aggressively like I thought we would and played well. I thought that Chris made a very good pitch to LaPorta. LaPorta does what he does, he not only hits mistakes, but he hits pretty good pitches too.  They took the lead and our kids came back, but I looked up at the scoreboard at the end and I saw we had 12 or 13 hits so we didn't lack for hitting, but obviously Florida did a very good job of getting out of jams and giving us base hits in non-scoring situations. We got hits, but we weren't very efficient."

On the pitch Chris Ingoglia threw for Florida first baseman Matt LaPorta's home run:

"He hit a good pitch from Chris.  I thought it was down, I thought it was away from him a little bit. I think he actually one-handed it, but that's what great hitters do. Like I said, he'll make you pay for mistakes, but I really don't think that was a mistake on Chris' part.

On Florida pitcher Bryan Ball's performance:

"You have got to tip your hat to Bryan. That's a sign of a good pitcher who may not be the sharpest that he's been or that he's used to, but he pitched his way out of it. Of course when they got the lead and they handed it over to Connor Falkenbach, we know how good he is, and he did what he does best."

On the rain delay/postponement of the game:

"As much as I hate what happened today, where Florida and us both have to play two, I think the right decision was made, especially for the safety of the players because there were some spots in the outfield and warning track that were not playable, and the right decision was made."

Stetson Sophomore Pitcher Chris Ingoglia

On Matt LaPorta's home run for Florida and his own performance:

"Well I have got to tip my hat to Matt LaPorta. He hit a great pitch and he hit it a long way.  I went out there today and I didn't have much off-speed, and if you're going to play a top team like Florida, you're going to need to mix more pitches than just fastball."

"I went out there today and I didn't have two other pitches to go with the fastball. And in the first two innings it was going by them, but eventually a great team like that is going to jump on it."

On what pitch he threw LaPorta on the home run:

"It was a curveball, and I'm going to have to review it, but I really think it was down. I thought it had great break too. I don't know if he was sitting on it."
