Miami Defeats Florida International in Regional Play
GAINESVILLE, Fla. - The Miami Hurricanes (31-26) used a five run fifth inning to defeat Florida International (41-19), 9-1, in the first game of the NCAA Regional at the University of Florida.
Miami opened the scoring in the top of the first inning. Lead off batter Paco Figueroa reached base on a dropped fly ball by Florida International's secondbaseman, Skipton Adams. He scored on Kevin Howard's 64th double of his career to give the Hurricanes the 1-0 lead. Howard's double put him one away from the school record.
After being dealt nine straight strikes by FIU pitcher Joshua Banks in the top of the second, the Canes extended their lead to 2-0 in the top of the third. Lead off batter Danny Figueroa reached base on balls. He advanced to second on a wild pitch to put him in scoring position with two outs. He scored on a double to left field by Javy Rodriguez for the two run lead.
A Danny Matienzo lead off home run in the fourth increased the Miami lead to three runs. The Golden Panthers were able to put the next two batters out, but then the Hurricanes went on a two out rally. Kevin Mannix started the rally with a walk. Danny Figueroa had a base hit through the right side. Paco Figueroa added another single to score Mannix and put runners on first and third with two outs. Brad Safchik drew a walk to load the bases, followed by a Rodriguez walk to score Danny Figueroa from third. FIU pitcher Banks was pulled and Derrick Taylor came into the game in relief with two outs and the bases loaded. A Howard single scored Safchik and Figueroa for the 7-0 Miami lead, but Rodriguez was thrown out at second to end the inning.
After a three-hour -and-35-minute rain delay the game resumed in the bottom of the fifth. Miami brought in relief pitcher Vince Bongiovanni after the delay.
Miami added another run as Richard Gionanni, pinch running for Mannix, scored on the RBI single by Paco Figueroa. Safchik was hit by a Taylor pitch to load the bases with no outs in Miami's half of the eighth. Danny Figueroa added another run as he came in from third when Rodriguez grounded into a double play for the first outs of the inning. Both runs in the inning were unearned due to an error by the short stop to start the inning.
Florida International put its first run on the board on a solo home run by Hector Nunez in the bottom of the eighth inning, cutting Miami's lead to 9-1.
Bongiovanni picked up the win for Miami. His record improves to 1-4 on the season. Banks took the loss for Florida International. His record is now 3-2.
Due to tonight's rain delay and resulting late night, all games for tomorrow have been moved back one hour. Saturday's games will begin at 12 p.m. with Florida International and the loser of the Florida vs. Bethune-Cookman game. Miami will take on the winner of the Florida vs. Bethune-Cookman game at approximately 4 p.m.
