2014 SEC All-Freshman Team

 

AS A FRESHMAN (2014): Named to the SEC All-Freshman Team at third base…Appeared in 41 games, with 34 starts (32 at third base, two at designated hitter)…Batted .238 with 16 runs, 14 walks, 12 RBI and five sacrifice hits…Saw action in 25 SEC games and made 22 starts…Hit .250 with 11 runs, 11 walks and eight RBI…Led off the third inning of the Gators’ SEC Tournament opener with an infield single and was 1-for-2 against Kentucky…Was 2-for-3 in the matchup with Mercer…Scored twice in the series-opening victory at No. 20 Alabama…Delivered a second-inning single that brought home Buddy Reed and added a sacrifice bunt in the ninth inning in UF’s 6-5 edging of Missouri that completed a sweep of the Tigers…Went 3-for-6 with two RBI and two runs in the doubleheader sweep of Georgia…Had an RBI single as part of the six-run fourth inning in the nightcap and launched his first career homer in the fifth inning of  the opener that was the difference in the hosts’ 3-2 decision…Poked a single into right center field that scored Peter Alonso in the Gators’ 8-0 shutout of No. 1 Florida State in Tallahassee…Batted .556 (5-for-9) in the series at No. 19 Kentucky, highlighted by a 4-for-5 effort in game two in which he had a pair of RBI singles…Tallied a career-high three RBI as the Orange and Blue finished off the sweep of No. 4 LSU in Gainesville…Drove in a couple of runs as the Gators knocked off top-ranked Florida State in Jacksonville…Drew a season-high two walks and was 1-for-2 with the decisive run in the SEC opener, a 2-1 win over Arkansas…Collected two hits and scored a run in the final game at No. 17 Miami (FL)…Came through with a pinch-hit single in his first collegiate at bat versus Maryland and came home on a single by Richie Martin.

 

HIGH SCHOOL: Infielder from Rockledge High School who played for head coach Greg Clayborne…The Raiders finished 22-6 overall in his final season and were 8-0 in district play…Rockledge advanced to the 2013 Class 5A regional quarterfinals…Chosen in the 39th round of the 2013 Major League Baseball Draft by the Kansas City Royals at No. 1,164th overall…Sternagel was a first-team Preseason All-American and was named to the Florida All-Region First Team by Rawlings/Perfect Game prior to his senior year…Ranked No. 9 in the state of Florida and No. 2 among shortstops in the Class of 2013 Final Rankings from Perfect Game…Checked in at No. 64 nationally and was the No. 10 shortstop nationally according to Perfect Game…Rated No. 297 in the 2013 Baseball America 500…Achieved all-state recognition in Class 5A as a senior…Earned first-team All-Space Coast from the Florida Today three-straight years and was his team’s Offense Most Valuable Player three times and its Defensive Most Valuable Player once…Participated in the Perfect Game All-American Classic at PETCO Park in San Diego in August 2012 along with future Gator teammates Brett Morales and A.J. Puk…Played football for one season and led the county in interceptions...Member of the Senior Leadership Group at Rockledge.

 

SUMMER: Played for the Waterloo (Iowa) Bucks in the Northwoods League last summer, along with Gator teammates Dane Dunning and A.J. Puk…Ranked as the No. 42 top prospect in the NWL by Perfect Game…Hit .299 in 29 games, with 21 runs, 13 walks and 10 RBI…Contributed five doubles and stole four bases…Went 3-for-5 with a double and scored a run in his final game of the campaign…Was 3-for-4 and scored three times in a 12-2 rout of Kalamazoo…Put together a six-game hitting streak between July 6-12 in which he was 8-for-24 (.333)…In a doubleheader split with Rochester on Independence Day, Sternagel was 3-for-7 (.429) with a pair of doubles…Also had a nine-game hitting streak from June 23-July 5, a stretch where he went 10-for-29 (.345)…Turned in multiple-hit outings in three of his first four outings for the Bucks.
