AS A FRESHMAN (2012): Having started at Florida in January, Gushue appeared in 52 games and made 39 starts (28-1B, 6-DH, 5-C) during his rookie campaign…Batted .206 with 23 walks, 21 RBI, 21 runs, eight doubles and five homers in overall games and hit .143 with seven RBI and five runs in 21 SEC outings …Was the only Gator chosen as the SEC’s Freshman of the Week twice last season (February 20, March 5)…Walked twice, singled and scored against Kent State at the NCAA College World Series…Delivered a pinch-hit, leadoff single in the ninth inning versus South Carolina in UF’s CWS opener…Batted .333 (4-for-12) in the series with LSU, including a 2-for-4 performance in the Gators’ 7-0 shutout with an RBI double…Doubled to drive in a run and lofted a sacrifice fly during the 9-4 win over Ole Miss…Drew a pair of walks and scored two runs in Florida’s 4-1 triumph in Jacksonville against Florida State…Connected on a solo shot in the third game against Vanderbilt as the Gators started SEC action 3-0 for the fourth time in five years…Had a two-run double as part of a four-run seventh inning to lift UF to a 10-2 win in the league opener versus the Commodores…Snapped a 2-2 tie with a solo homer in the seventh frame in the 3-2 decision over Florida Gulf Coast that completed a weekend sweep…During the weekend set with Miami, Gushue hit .400 (4-for-10), with four RBI, three runs and a pair of homers…In Saturday night’s series-clinching victory, the rookie tied the game at 3-3 with a fourth-inning solo shot right after Brian Johnson’s two-run jack and snapped a 5-5 stalemate the following inning with a towering three-run bomb that landed in the third level of the parking garage overlooking right field…Added a single in the sixth and was hit by a pitch in the eighth on his way to a career-best 3-for-4, four-RBI performance…In Sunday’s dramatic come-from-behind win for the Orange and Blue, as the Gators scored five runs in the ninth to turn a 5-3 deficit into an 8-5 triumph, Gushue was 1-for-3 with a run scored and was hit by a pitch in the last inning with the score tied…Tabbed as the initial SEC Freshman of the Week for the 2012 season after a memorable opening weekend…Gushue was one of three freshmen to start on Opening Night for head coach Kevin O’Sullivan’s club, joining third baseman Josh Tobias and second baseman Casey Turgeon…Gushue homered on the first pitch he saw as a collegian Friday night in the Gators’ opener against No. 16 Cal State Fullerton…With a solo shot with two down in the second inning off CSF ace Dylan Floro, Gushue became the first UF player to homer on his first swing since Chris Freshcorn accomplished the feat on March 5, 2008, against Campbell...Austin Maddox homered in his collegiate at bat against USF on Feb. 19, 2010…Gushue moved Florida in front on Saturday with a two-run triple in the fourth inning of an eventual 5-2 win and batted .286 (2-for-7) with three RBI, two runs and a 1.000 slugging percentage in the two games he played.
SUMMER: Joined Gator teammates Daniel Gibson and Bobby Poyner on the Madison (Wis.) Mallards of the Northwoods League last summer…Had a .250 average in 21 games, with 14 RBI, 12 runs, nine walks, two doubles a couple of homers.
HIGH SCHOOL: Catcher from Calvary Christian Academy who played for head coach Greg Mucerino…Graduated high school in December of 2011 after earning first-team all-state and first-team all-county all three years of his high school career…Collected All-American accolades from Max Prep in 2009 and 2010 and was named as a Perfect Game Preseason All-American in 2011…Finished with a career batting average of .472 (102-for-216) and a school-record 30 homers…Batted .390 with 25 RBI, nine homers and a .915 slugging percentage as a junior…Had ranked No. 16 in the state of Florida and rated No. 96 nationally in the Class of 2012 Rankings from Perfect Game…Hit .530 with 35 RBI, 35 runs, 11 homers, seven doubles and a slugging percentage of 1.136 during his sophomore campaign…Batted .484 with 43 RBI, 10 round-trippers and had a 1.011 slugging percentage as a freshman in 2009…Was also a member of the swim team at CCA.
