AS A REDSHIRT FRESHMAN (2009): Chosen to the SEC Academic Honor Roll…Had a 2-1 record with a 5.73 earned run average in 15 games…Drew starts against Eastern Michigan (Feb. 24), UCF (April 8) and Florida Gulf Coast (May 6)…Pitched a total of 33 innings, with 18 strikeouts and 13 walks…Appeared in five SEC outings and was 0-0 with a 4.00 ERA in nine innings…Tossed a scoreless ninth against Southern Miss in the NCAA Super Regional opener…Came out of the bullpen and kept Kentucky off the board for three innings during the regular-season finale…Equaled season high of three strikeouts in the first meeting with No. 3 LSU, a dominant performance in which he set down all six Tiger hitters he faced…Notched a pair of punchouts in his lone inning of work against Stetson on April 15…Credited with the home win over UNF in which he pitched a career-high 4.2 innings, with three K and zero runs…Claimed his collegiate debut with four shutout innings against Eastern Michigan in which he permitted a pair of singles.

 

(2008): Named to the SEC Freshman Academic Honor Roll…Was sidelined for the entire campaign and earned a medical redshirt.

 

SUMMER: Helped the Bourne Braves to their first-ever Cape Cod League title in 2009…Appeared in 16 regular-season games out of the bullpen as the Braves claimed the Western Division crown…During the regular season, he totaled an ERA of 3.00, with 22 strikeouts and eight walks in 21 innings…Also notched one save…In his lone postseason appearance, Poovey threw two scoreless innings in which he registered four strikeouts against Orleans…Bourne swept both playoff rounds to win the championship.

 

HIGH SCHOOL: Played for head coach Jeff Parham at South Caldwell High School, which captured the 2007 North Carolina state championship…Ranked as the No. 93 prospect in the nation by Baseball America and the No. 4 prospect in North Carolina by Perfect Game in the fall of 2006…Was an all-state pick as a junior, when the Spartans were the runner-up in Class 4A…Member of the Beta and Interact clubs in high school.

 

PERSONAL: Justin Wayne Poovey was born Jan. 8, 1989, in Hickory, N.C…His parents are Ed and Pam Poovey…Has a younger brother, Jacob, 17…Enjoys jogging and reading…Chose to attend Florida because of its great athletics program, the baseball coaching staff and its beautiful campus…Also considered Clemson and North Carolina…Majoring in finance.
