AS A JUNIOR (2008): Came out of the bullpen in 10 games and was 1-0 with a 6.00 earned run average…Pitched a total of nine innings, allowing 12 hits and 11 runs (six earned)…Permitted eight walks and notched five strikeouts…Struck out the lone batter he faced at No. 1 Florida State on April 15…Threw a perfect inning in relief during the game-three setback to Arkansas…Combined with four other Gator pitchers in a 15-0 dismantling of Campbell on March 5…Worked 2.1 innings and matched his career high of three strikeouts in the 16-8 win over Eastern Michigan on Feb. 27…It was LaCoste's first win since March 8, 2006 against UNC Greensboro.
AS A SOPHOMORE (2007): Made eight appearances out of the bullpen for the Gators and did not receive a decision…Sported a 3.38 ERA after giving up three earned runs in eight innings…Totaled eight strikeouts and had four walks…All eight of his stints lasted one inning…Notched two strikeouts twice (Florida State on April 3 and LSU on May 11…Florida was 5-3 in the games in which he participated.
AS A FRESHMAN (2006): Participated in 11 games during his first season at Florida and made seven starts…Turned in a 2-2 record and compiled a 2.77 ERA during 26 innings on the hill…Hitters were just .182 (8-for-44) against him with runners on base…Issued 15 walks and totaled 11 strikeouts…Permitted two runs or less in five of his seven starts…Was in the Gators' starting rotation for the first three series of the year, versus Cincinnati, Miami (Fla.) and Wake Forest…Had a season-high three K in 1.1 innings out of the bullpen at Mississippi State…Started the 8-3 triumph at Florida State and limited the Seminoles to one hit over three frames…Worked a career-high five innings to defeat UNC Greensboro, 3-1, on March 8…Kept the Spartans off the scoreboard by scattering six hits…Provided two perfect innings of relief in the 1-0 heartbreaker to Texas A&M…Allowed three hits and four runs, although none were earned, in his first road start at Miami on Feb. 19…Captured his collegiate debut with three scoreless innings in the 20-4 victory over Cincinnati.
SUMMER: Played for Altamonte Springs of the Florida Collegiate Summer League in 2006 with Gator teammates Avery Barnes and Chas Spottswood…Made six appearances for the Snappers, including four starts, and was 1-0 with a 3.00 ERA…Struck out 25 batters in 24.0 innings, with 14 walks, and limited opposing batters to a .193 clip.
HIGH SCHOOL: Competed for head coach Jerry Holland at the Paxon School for Advanced Studies and earned four varsity letters…Became the first player in Holland's coaching tenure with the Golden Eagles to earn a scholarship…Established single-season strikeout records during his junior (100) and senior (105) campaigns…Two-time Most Valuable Player of his team…Paxon finished as the district runner-up in 2004 and was third this past year…Selected to the 2005 All-First Coast third team by the Florida Times-Union and was a member of the All-Gateway Conference team…Registered 16 strikeouts in a seven-inning no-hitter against Columbia High School…Played in the World Youth Classic in the summer of 2005 in Binghamton, N.Y., for the victorious Jacksonville Warriors team…As a junior, he claimed the Golden Eagles' Triple Crown by pacing the club in batting average (.469), runs batted in (28) and homers (five)…Chosen to the All-First Coast third team and was an honorable mention choice by the Gateway Conference…Pitched the semifinal game of the 2004 Sunshine State Games in Tallahassee for the Jacksonville Bandits and head coach Doug Corbett, a former Gator pitcher…Squad later claimed the gold medal at the event…Participated in the Seniors' First Coast All-Star Game at the University of North Florida in May, 2005…Attended the Diamond Club Showcase in Tampa, Fla., and the UNC Wilmington East Coast Professional Showcase…Also lettered twice apiece in football and played basketball…Member of Paxon's National Honor Society.
PERSONAL: James Kenneth LaCoste was born April 17, 1987, in Jacksonville, Fla…His parents are John and Debra LaCoste, both of whom work for the National Park Service…His father played baseball at Pensacola Junior College and later at Troy (Ala.), while his mother played field hockey at Cortland State (N.Y.)…Has a younger brother, Jordan, 15…His great-grandfather was a catcher at Amherst (Mass.) College…Enjoys playing ping pong…Majoring in social and behavioral sciences.
