Jason Murray begins his first season with the University of Florida baseball program as its volunteer assistant coach.
Murray arrives in Gainesville after serving two seasons as an assistant baseball coach under Joe Hudak at Winthrop University in Rock Hill, S.C. He worked primarily with the Eagle infielders and assisted with base running, hitting instruction and recruiting. Last year Murray helped lead Winthrop to a school record 48-16-1 record, No. 2 seed at the East Carolina/Wilson Regional and a consensus No. 24 national ranking at season's end. The Eagles also earned their third NCAA Regional appearance in the past six years.
Prior to his two seasons at Winthrop, Murray coached a one-year stint at Rio Hondo College in Whittier, Calif. He also served as a student assistant coach at Ball State University (Muncie, Ind.) after concluding his playing career in 1999. Ball State finished 39-18 record and Mid-American Conference Western Division title. Murray has also coached in the Bluegrass Collegiate League.
Murray completed a successful collegiate playing career at Ball State where he started at shortstop from 1996-97. As a senior, he was named a first-team All-MAC selection and an American Baseball Coaches Association All-Region performer after ranking second in the league and 20th nationally in batting average (.425). He ranked fourth in the MAC and posted the BSU's second-best single season effort with 20 doubles while leading the Cardinals to their first-ever 40-win season.
Murray earned a bachelor's degree in 1998 from Ball State in elementary education. He is engaged to be married to Mindy Curtis.
